Joy in the churchyard

Thanks to Gary Magold for this early picture of the 'Bermondsey Joy Slide' which was located in St James's Churchyard and delighted generations of local children.

It was a gift of Peek Freans, the biscuit firm, and was constructed by W.J. Dixon & Sons, a local building firm.

I find that hardly a funeral visit goes by without someone from the family reminiscing about the glory days of  Bermondsey's 'joy slide.'

The big question is (as I am often asked): can we bring it back - and restore joy to the churchyard?
