Seven new fruit trees, joining existing ones in St James Churchyard, form the new 'Joyslide Orchard.' A hundred years ago in 1922 local doctor Alfred Salter was elected to parliament and his wife, Ada, became the Mayor of Bermondsey and the first woman mayor in London.
It was Ada, with her Bermondsey Beautification Committee, who had the idea of planting the trees that adorn so many of our streets in Bermondsey & Rotherhithe, and the new orchard is a lovely way of commemorating that work and making densely populated inner urban Bermondsey a greener place.
